Military Prayers from America’s Leaders, a book review by Chaplain Jason Ladd:

First Principles Press has released book chronicling the history of prayer in America’s military establishment.  Endowed by Their Creator: A Collection of Historic  Military Prayers 1774-Present is a must-read for service members seeking to understand the history and role of prayer in the military.

Since the founding of our country, our presidents and military leaders have led our nation and military through dark hours by calling upon the favor of Almighty God to both grant us victory and deliver us from evil.  Prayer has historically been acknowledged as a “military necessity” by America’s uniformed military leadership. – Chaplain Ladd

Book Summary from FPP

Col. Ray and FPP uncovered in the Library of Congress and other libraries, 67 military prayer books from as early as 1643 to 1986.  These official American military prayer books were distributed to U.S. fighting forces largely during times of war and national crisis, with a significant majority of the prayers concluding in Jesus’ name.  Out of this extensive research which formed the Appendix of a brief filed in the ACLU vs. VMI case, First Principles Press created and published a case for the “Military Necessity” of prayer with “evidence” – a collection of historic American military prayers.  This historic case and collection is entitled, “Endowed by Their Creator”: A Collection of Historic American Military Prayers 1774-Present, it contains over 280 uniquely American prayers selected from a total of 74 American military prayer books and hymnals.

The Army Lawyer

The Army Lawyer from the Headquarters of the Department of the Army, November 1998.  This official document specifically states “prayers should not reference divinity by any sectarian name (Jesus, Allah) but rather use ‘generic’ terms.”

Military Necessity of Prayer

“Prayer for the common good and acknowledgement of Divine Providence is a central, official and historical tenet of the combat leadership preparation of the American Military, particularly officer training and particularly in times of national peril or war.”

Backgrounder – Brigadier General Robinson Risner

Brigadier General Robinson Risner was a senior ranking officer, who was held and tortured for seven and a half years in the infamous Hanoi Hilton, a North Vietnamese prison for some of our POW’s. “I could not have existed if I had not been able to pray.”

Backgrounder – Military’s “Unofficial Policy” & Army Lawyer

A new effort has appeared on the horizon, both from within the Obama Administration, particularly in the Pentagon, and from well-funded outside groups like the ACLU, to forbid any unit-led prayers by military commanders and by imposing an “unofficial policy” against praying in the name of Jesus Christ or in Jesus’ name by chaplains.

Backgrounder – Endowed by their Creator

In 1942, the U.S. Government Printing Office printed at tax expense a copy of the New Testament and Psalms “for the use of Protestant Personnel of the Army of the United States.”
These small pocket-sized Bibles emphasized the prayers of the Psalmist David, a man well versed in war and the intervening Providence of Almighty God.
