War of 1812 – Did You Know?
• During the War of 1812 More British soldiers were killed by a tornado than by all the American firearms that were mustered to defend Washington, D.C.
• The rain following the tornado extinguished the fires set by the British in the White House, the Library of Congress, the Treasury, the Patent Office and other public buildings.
British Admiral Cockburn exclaimed to a lady standing nearby, “Great God, Madam! Is this the kind of storm to which you are accustomed in this infernal country?”
The lady replied, “No, Sir, this is a special interposition of Providence to drive our enemies from our city.”
