War – A Spiritual Battle
By Andrew, FPP Intern
“When the war of the giants is over the wars of the pygmies will begin.” – Winston Churchill
While this quote seems like a joke, it is actually extremely accurate. It seems like there is always a war being fought somewhere and that is what Churchill was trying to get people to understand. As the Prime Minister and the face of England during World War II, Churchill knew all about war and he wanted everyone else to as well.
Beyond armies, guns and battleships there is another kind of war. Life itself is a constant Spiritual war. Ephesians chapter 6, tells us to “Put on the full armor of God.” Why would Paul tell us to put on armor unless we were going into battle? Life is that battle and Satan is the main enemy; in fact, Ephesians 6 even calls him “the wicked one.” Your weapons for this Spiritual war are the Sword of the Spirit (the Bible) and the Shield of Faith. Ephesians 6:16 tells us that faith in God will “quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.” The Bible is serves as your best offensive weapon. We see an example of this when Satan tempted Jesus in the dessert. Jesus’s responded to temptation and strife with scripture, to keep himself in line with what was right.
James 1:12 says that, “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.” Life is a constant war, bringing one Spiritual battle after another, and many physical trials as well. Yet, God has promised victory, he has promised us the “Crown of Life” or “Eternal life” (John 3:16). To partake in this victory we must remain steadfast in the war that is life on earth.
Winston Churchill said it this way, “We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”
When life becomes hard and the issues and struggles ahead of us continue to mount, we must never surrender but press on to the victory.
