More Government Censorship of the Church
Christian Churches across America continue to take a stand for the rights of the unborn, and other vulnerable citizens, but it has not effectively fought against the erosion of those rights in the legal system and in public policy. When public policy is at odds with the Bible, who determines which set of rules will govern our day to day lives?
Daniel gives us a clear scriptural example of a man who prayed publicly and in defiance of an unjust law. Following that example, Archbishop Timothy Broglio attempted to refute an unjust law that will result in the extermination of the unborn, he was censored by a government official in a way that takes America a giant step closer to an official policy of government control of religion.
Archbishop Broglio sent a pastoral letter to be read by military chaplains during the weekly mass. The letter calls on Catholics to resist the policy mandated by Obamacare to provide insurance covering abortifacients, contraception and sterilization. He stated in the latter that “we cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law.” The Army’s office of the Chief of Chaplains, a political office of the state, subsequently sent an email to senior chaplains instructing them not to read the letter.
A government official has censored and edited the instruction of pastoral leadership to its churches, under the pretense that it could be a call to civil disobedience. Is the next step censoring those chaplains who refuse to officiate at same sex unions? When the president objected to a “right of conscience” clause in the National Defense Authorization Act, he stated that approving such exemptions “is potentially harmful to good order and discipline.” It appears that support for the killing of the unborn, and the re-definition of marriage are being mandated by government and imposed upon all Catholics in the military. Life and Liberty are rights endowed by our Creator.
