Duty – Vermont
So we have visited Maine and New Hampshire. Next is Vermont!
“Fun Facts” about Vermont…
– The first printing press in the state was established in Dresden in 1779.
– After the War of Independence, Vermont continued to govern itself as a sovereign entity for 14 years, based in the eastern town of Windsor.
– Vermont joined the Federal Union as the 14th state. It was the first to enter after the first original 13 colonies.
– It is the home to North America’s greatest concentration of 18th century military sites, including Mount Washington, Crown Point, the restored Fort Ticonderoga, the Hubbardton, Bennington, and Saratoga Battlefields.
– It has housed presidents and other men of importance. The 21st president, Chester Alan Arthur, was from Vermont, the son of a Baptist minister. Vice president Calvin Coolidge vacationed there before the death of the President Warren Harding. He returned as the 30th President, and established his summer White House office in the dance hall on the second floor above the local general store.
